Personal Reflection

This is my portfolio about some things I have done in school. I am good at some things and some still need improvement like the two things I need to improve on, which is not to procrastinate, not doing things last minute specially since exams are coming up, the other thing I need to improve on is to work harder and focus more to get a better understanding of my work. Two things I am good at are being quiet in class and keeping my focus and also talking to myself about the answers teachers ask. My goal for the next 6 weeks of school is to work as hard as I can, finish my homework and to do as much work as I can in school, also specially work hard for the exams and focus on studying by not multi-tasking.

  • In looking at your work, I would like to compliment you on the following 2 things:

Math

Term 1 Reflection

For term 1 in math, the very first thing we learned were rate, ratio, and proportional reasoning. We put our notes down on a door like pink paper, it had meanings, focus ons, examples and more. To end that unit off we made our own version of the sesame street videos. Harbeck said we get to do fun things like that after we finish units. We also learned about squares, we made a multiplication table using a grid and highlighted the perfect squares. We solved perfect squares and used methods like prime factorization.
In term 1 I did many of my work, I only did the things i struggled on a different paper and tried to do them. My homework book and textbook work were 98 percent finished.
I will definitely make time for school work to make sure I finish all of my work including math. I will try not to put things aside all the time, hopefully I do those and my grades will go higher and I will learn more and I won’t be rushed.

Term 2 Reflection

For term 2 I think I did well on finding the volume on rectangular & triangular prisms and cylinders because I enjoyed working with the formulas and I remembered them quickly. My struggle at the beginning was surface area, I probably would have done better on my surface area test if I made sure I did my homework right because it was easier for me when I found out how to do it the right way. On percents I think I did okay and the main struggle was my lack of effort on the blog, I did things last minute and did not comment as much as term 1. For next term I will do better by doing my textbook and homework book work on time, I will also participate as much as I can on the blog and also do some extra activities to prepare for any quizzes or tests. I learned how to use the formulas properly on volumes and for percents I learned finding the gst and pst taxes and I learned how to work mathematically with 3d shapes for surface area.

The Man Who Planted Trees

3. The Man Who Planted Trees relates to the local community because the local community is happily living with trees just like how the villagers got to live because of Elzeard’s tree work. I can relate to this because Elzeard Bouffier made a difference by planting about 200 plants everyday, just like how me and my partner worked together for “pay it forward” we made some difference by making people’s day and donating to salvation army.

5. Things that motivate people and organizations in their approach to the environment are advertisements on billboards and commercials. The people who care about the earth, try to get others involved by making advertisements on billboards and commercials.

6. The different character’s attitudes towards the forest are:
  • Jean: met the forest maker, supportive and compassionate
  • The charcoal burners: burned charcoals, happy-go-lucky
  • Elzeard Bouffier: he made it, caring, encouragement, kind, and loyal
  • Government Official: he tried to get votes and said he was going to keep forest he did not, selfish and arrogant
  • Member of Parliament: did the same as government official, conceited
  • Timber merchants: they destroyed the forest, gluttonous and careless
  • Villagers: lived thanks to Elzeard, clueless

10. Trees affect climate at a local and global level because it provides air for us to breathe so it somewhat helps us live, cool hair for less heat and reduce pollution because they remove carbon dioxide. Certain trees also provide food such as banana’s or mango for certain climates in countries, people also cut them down to make things like furniture or paper supplies.

GRADE EIGHT STUDENT ASSIGNMENT- PORTFOLIO REFLECTION
TASK/INTENT/CRITERIAThroughout the year I have completed assignments based on Assessment for Learning practices. The learning process has followed the three key components:Subject: English Language ArtsSimile Definition Card
TASK: What was I asked to do for this assignment? I was required to create a dfeinition card showing an example of the definition with an illustration of the example.
INTENT: Why am I completing this assignment? There are several reasons why I completed this. First the assignment helped me comprehend the meaning of simile. It also helped me create a visual and written example, getting to show the written example visually. We then got to design/colour its frame and background relating to the visual example.
CRITERIA: How do I know what I needed to do to be successful in completing this assignment?
  • create a definition of the title with an example
  • making the written example into a visual
  • relating background/frame/title relate to the visual
  • followed rubric given (layout, definition, creativity, etc...)

NEXT STEPS:
  • I can now create similes
  • I can now relate visuals into other designs
  • I can now show examples in other ways
